A native of Chicago, Eggers graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in journalism. He is the author of novels, novellas, short stories, essays, non-fiction, and screen plays (Away We Go and Where the Wild Things Are); his works include Zeitoun, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, You Shall Know Our Velocity, and What Is the What. Eggers is founder and editor of McSweeney’s independent publishing house that produces books, a quarterly journal, The Believer magazine and the Wholphin DVD of short films and documentaries. In 2002, he co-founded 826 Valencia, a nonprofit writing and tutoring center for youth in the Mission District of San Francisco which now has sister 826 centers in Chicago, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Ann Arbor, Seattle, and Boston. He is the co-founder of the Voice of Witness book series that usesoral history to illuminate human rights crises around the world.
