Events for Sigma Kappa Delta Members
More than 1,000 English honor society members will gather at the New Orleans Marriott to reawaken their love of language, literature, service, and culture.
Wednesday, February 29
- Registration desk open from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Pick up a ticket for Naomi Shihab Nye's Wednesday evening event or Thursday afternoon workshop. - Attend Pre-Convention Literacy Celebration featuring Naomi Shihab Nye, sponsored by NEHS, 7:00 - 8:20 p.m. (Mardi Gras Ballroom).
- Applaud members as they read works published in The Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle.
- Brush off your best poem or short fiction excerpt for Open Mic, sponsored by Student Leadership and Alumni Epsilon.
Thursday, March 1
- Registration desk open from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
- Attend paper and roundtable presentations.
- Participate in a workshop lead by Naomi Shihab Nye (ticket required), followed by a book signing (open to all attendees), 1:30 - 2:45 p.m. (Carondelet).
- Learn from ΣΤΔ's most successful chapters! The Student Representatives and Student Advisors are sponsoring workshops throughout the convention on important chapter management and student leadership topics.
- Applaud scholarship and award winners and celebrate chapter and sponsor anniversaries at the Awards and Recognition Ceremony.
- Get acquainted with your Regent, Student Representatives, and other chapter members in your region at your Informal Regional Caucus—chapters must send a voting student delegate to this meeting and to the Business Meeting and Regional Caucuses on Friday in order to receive the $200 voting delegate reimbursement ($400 for chapters outside the 48 contiguous states).
- Go to a reading with our featured speaker Anthony Doerr, 7:30 - 8:50 p.m. (Acadia/Bissonet).
- Participate in the (Dry) T-shirt and Skit Competition and the Bad Poetry Contest. Cheer and jeer while your peers recreate humiliating childhood scenes, conjure up adolescent turmoil, and expose their wounded hearts!
Friday, March 2
- Registration desk open from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
- Attend paper and roundtable presentations.
- Spend time with featured speaker Anthony Doerr in a workshop, followed by a book signing open to all attendees, 8:00 - 9:15 a.m. (Acadia, followed by Bissonet).
- Attend the Business Meeting and Regional Caucuses—chapters must send a voting student delegate to these meetings and to the Informal Regional Caucus on Thursday in order to receive the $200 voting delegate reimbursement ($400 for chapters outside the 48 contiguous states).
- Sponsors, plan on the Regents and Sponsors Luncheon—with special guest speaker Emily Toth, author of the Ms. Mentor column in the Chronicle of Higher Education, 12:30 - 1:15 p.m. (La Galerie 3).
- Mingle at the President's Reception for faculty and alumni.
- Enjoy our featured speaker and author of the Common Reader, Natasha Trethewey, followed by a book signing open to all attendees, 7:30 - 8:50 p.m. (Acadia/Bissonet).
- Experience the sights and sounds of New Orleans at night, or stay in for an event sponsored by our Host Chapter.
Saturday, March 3
- Registration desk open from 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
- Attend paper and roundtable presentations.
- Gain insight into Natasha Trethewey's writing process in a Question and Answer Session with the poet, 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. (Acadia).
- Hum along in a songwriting workshop with singer/songwriter Tom Kimmel (sponsored by Sigma Kappa Delta), 1:45 - 3:00 p.m. (Acadia).
- Relax with complimentary punch or a drink from the cash bar at the Student Leadership Reception immediately before the gala.
- Enjoy the food and celebrate excellence at the Red & Black Gala Dinner and Convention Awards.
Sunday, March 4
