Award Cycle: Spring (Not being offered for 2026)
Sigma Tau Delta encourages undergraduate student members with an interest in communications, marketing, journalism, or education to apply for this paid internship opportunity with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
The six-week internship spans from early July through mid-August and will require 15 hours of work per week. The intern will contribute to various aspects of NCTE’s communications program, including creating and publishing content for social media, email newsletters and messages, and NCTE.org.
The intern will also liaise with key staff members from other departments to build collaboration skills and learn about day-to-day operations. NCTE is a fully remote organization, so the intern must have access to a computer, video camera, and reliable internet.
Stipends from Sigma Tau Delta and NCTE
- Sigma Tau Delta will award the NCTE intern a $300 stipend.
- NCTE will provide the intern with a $1,000 stipend.
The intern will also receive a one-year complimentary NCTE membership after successful completion of the program, as well as a certificate of participation.
Internship Experience
The intern will report to NCTE’s Director of Communications and will receive coaching on writing and creating engaging digital content. Work hours will be flexible and adaptable to the intern’s schedule. NCTE uses Microsoft Teams for meetings and communicating during the workday.

- Strong writing and editing skills (English or Journalism majors preferred)

- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally
- Flexibility and adaptability to unexpected changes in schedule or assignments
- Demonstrated success working in a fast-paced environment
- Confidence in asking questions and gathering accurate information from across diverse sources
- Collaborative spirit and desire to learn
Eligibility
Applicants for the NCTE Internship must be:
- an active Sigma Tau Delta student member in good standing;
- pursuing an undergraduate degree; and
- a member of a chapter located within the 50 United States.
Members who have graduated in the fall semester or will be graduating during the spring semester are also eligible to apply.
Other
The internship may be eligible for college credit at the intern’s home institution provided it qualifies under the rules and regulations of that institution. Should the student pursue this option, it is their responsibility to submit application materials and pay the tuition and fees.

Applications for the NCTE Internship are accepted through AwardSpring. The link to access the Sigma Tau Delta AwardSpring platform will be posted on the AwardSpring Application informational page of our website during the Spring Awards Cycle.

2. Cover Letter that addresses the following:
- why you are interested in this opportunity;
- how it fits into your long-term education and career goals; and
- any relevant work or volunteer experience.
3. A Letter of Recommendation from your Advisor, Professor of English, or Professor of Journalism. The due date for this letter of recommendation will be one week after the AwardSpring application deadline. Interview Process
Applications will be submitted through AwardSpring and vetted for membership before being sent to NCTE for their review and selection.
NCTE will review all applications and will conduct interviews with finalists.
Blog Requirement
Following the internship, stipend recipients are required to submit an article (400-600 words) for WORDY by Nature, the official Society blog, sharing such things as how the internship contributed to their professional growth or field of study; its impact on their future career plans; and the importance of the funding to the internship experience.
