Between Doubt and Discovery: Becoming a Sigma Tau Delta Journal Intern

The Sigma Tau Delta Journals caught the glimmering sight of potential in a diamond in the rough. Honestly; I was told that I did not have as much experience as the two other interns with me during the summer internship. However, Managing Editor of Publications Dr. Carie King told me to not let that overwhelm me, because she knew there was something special inside a 22-year-old woman with no prior writing experience.

The first two weeks of the internship were engulfed with eagerness bundled inside a fistful of unease. I was going to be working alongside two individuals who had already worked on journals and entries before. Me? I had just finished taking an Advanced Grammar course that semester, and then there I was: sitting in front of my workspace, staring back at the mound of literary works as if I knew what I was doing.

This is where Dr. King came in. She would set up meetings every two weeks to allow us to express any questions or concerns we may have had during our process and to get more opinions and perspectives from our fellow team members. No questions were wrong in the eyes of Dr. King, allowing for a comfortable and safe working environment that empowered me to open my third-eye chakra in creative constructive feedback.

Dr. King used a term one day during our video conference—Imposter Syndrome, where one tends to doubt one’s accomplishments, despite evidence of their capabilities. She saw it in all three of us editorial interns.

Working as an editorial intern has opened a career path I did not understand until I was given this amazing opportunity to seek other dimensions of writing. Editing other people’s literary works alongside multi-faceted team members is super mathematical! I left this internship with more confidence in my judgement than I had first walked in. If it weren’t for my amazing mentor, as well as the two talented individuals I had the privilege to work alongside, I would not be this better version of myself that I am now.
