My summer Marketing & Copywriting internship with the Chandler Chamber of Commerce was an incredible experience that tested my knowledge and exposed me to many new skills and career opportunities.
I strengthened my English and writing skills by drafting social media captions, email templates, press releases, and the monthly e-mag. I utilized my marketing and social media skills by creating Canva and video content across Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook. I also dove into event management by choosing themes, setting up/taking down, and attending the events the Chamber holds. I had never truly explored Canva prior to this internship, but I was given free range on design, so I learned how to make videos and use the various tools available, which was exciting. Additionally, I have used InDesign before, so it was nice to brush up on my skills for the e-mag and learn new tools and methods for a different purpose.
Even though publishing is my primary field of interest, I am planning on focusing on publicity or social media marketing within that area, so this internship still provided me with practice and skill development that ensured I am indeed passionate in pursuing them as a career.
Interestingly, I had never considered copywriting or event management until I started doing both for this role. I enjoy coming up with creative wording for a targeted audience and thinking up themes and design elements for events, since I have an eye for finer details and organization. As I look for jobs and more internships, I can add some additional opportunities to my search, which is perfect for me since I want a wide range of choices and interests.
My boss is a former Iowa alum, which was a great starting point to our relationship. My other co-workers in the office were kind, supportive, and gave wonderful feedback. My secondary supervisor runs a social media agency on the side, and I plan on reaching out to him about questions and possible opportunities with the agency. The Chamber CEO has also been a great resource and since she knows many of the business owners in my city, I plan on connecting with her soon and seeing if she can open doors for networking and career opportunities.
The Sigma Tau Delta Internship Stipend enabled me to gain this invaluable practical work experience. Since the Chamber is a nonprofit with a small staff, the internship was unpaid and I would not have been able to pursue the opportunity without Sigma Tau Delta’s financial support. I appreciate having new resume experience and some monetary compensation as well, since I wasn’t able to work full-time elsewhere to make up for it due to the hours I was putting in with the Chamber. I am extremely grateful to have received the stipend in order to continue my academic and experiential pursuits and as a reward for my hard work this summer.

Internship Stipend
Sigma Tau Delta offers funding for current undergraduate and graduate student members accepting internships for which their expenses exceed what they will be paid. Sigma Tau Delta will not cover expenses related to tuition and/or student fees. The Internship Stipend is a competitive program providing a limited number of stipends of up to $1,500 each.
The internship must involve working for an “organization” that has a positive impact on the community while being directed by a supervisor/mentor within that organization, and the intern’s duties must be consistent with the applicant’s level of education, area of study, and career goals. Financial need will be taken into consideration in addition to internship length. Applicants are responsible for obtaining and providing verification of the internship. Check out BestColleges’ Ultimate Guide to Internships for advice on finding and applying for internships.
The Internship Stipend does not apply to activities that are part of a student’s pre-professional degree requirements, such as student teaching or capstone internships in journalism/technical writing, and cannot be used to supplement a graduate assistantship. Students are eligible for the Internship Stipend award once per internship.
